Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, Riki Matsuda was taught how to observe her surroundings through the Montessori curriculum. Throughout her education, she found humor in misunderstandings and saw exceptions to every rule. Her work relies on these subtleties and inconstancies within our everyday lives. Made up of found paper with bits of color and line, Matsuda recreates odd but familiar images that ask her viewers to look harder and see reality with more clarity.

Since her graduation from Columbus College of Art and Design, where she studied sculpture and portraiture, she has settled in Charleston to focus on her career as an artist. Moving to the South has already provided many opportunities, including the group show Static in the Snow as well as an upcoming exhibition with CSA artist James Wine.
